Living in Znojmo, Czech Republic

Now that I have been here for over a month, I am finally ready to do an update on what's been going on! We found out we were going to be coming to the Czech Republic with a lot more notice than last year, so we had more time to prepare, but it still seemed to make the summer go by that much faster.

When we were first discussing where we were going to spend this winter, Czech wasn't necessarily on the top of our list. Cam had this hockey league in his sights, but it wasn't until he got in touch with Znojmo that we considered Czech to be an option. The more we looked into it, the more intriguing it seemed to be for us.

Cam had to be here at the end of July, and I was going to join him about a month later. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, I didn't arrive until halfway through September. Cam had gotten settled and was just starting his regular season so it was pretty good timing.

I was lucky enough to get a few weeks of good weather before fall set in. This week has been quite a bit cooler and rainy, but there was one nice day that Cam was on the road that I went out to do some exploring.

Our town is quite a bit bigger than last year, so there's more going on. We've already established some favourite restaurants, checked out the movie theatre and figured out which grocery store to go to depending on the meal we're making (this is is very important to us lol).

Because the town is a decent size, we haven't done much exploring of the rest of the country yet. Similar to a lot of Czech, the majority of the buildings have a red stone roof. We've also noticed that there are very few houses, and most people live in apartment buildings.

Znojmo is an old, walled town so the architecture is really cool. Its sometimes hard to believe we actually live here when we're walking around. It has a beautiful park in the middle and several town squares.

There's also a beautiful national park along the edge of town, which is beautiful right now with the changing colours. We haven't gone here much, but I checked out some of the trails the other day and its definitely going to be a place we go back to.

The leaves don't quite compare to those back home in New Brunswick, but the views were still amazing. Because the town is built on high ground, the river that runs below and the lookouts provide amazing picture spots.

This year has been a little different than last so far. When we were in Switzerland, we seemed to have more free days to do some road trips and we tried to pack in as much as we could. Our plan this year is to do less of those smaller trips and save up for bigger trips when we get more days off in a row.

I was fortunate to be able to find a job here in town which has kept me pretty busy. I am working at the local language school, teaching english to kids between ages 3-12. So far, its been a great new challenge and is totally different than what I'm used to.

Our next adventures will be next week when Cam gets some time off. We don't know for sure where we will be heading, so stay tuned!
