Grenen Beach in Skagen, Denmark

When Cam's parents were here visiting in December, we had a free morning to visit Grenen Beach in Skagen, Denmark. There is plenty of coastline in Denmark, but Skagen is at the very northern tip of the country.

Skagen is only about an hour drive from where we are living and was such a fun day trip. We only had a few hours so we headed right to the beach and didn't explore the town.

Grenen is a really nice beach, but what makes it unique is its sand bar. Its created by the waves of two seas crashing together.

The Kattegat Sea and part of the North Sea meet and crash into each other giving the unique sight in the picture above. It was fairly windy the day we came so we were able to see the waves pretty well, but it was a little too cold to go in the water.

Even without the meeting of the seas, the beach was so refreshing. The walk from the parking lot to where we took these pictures was just long enough to enjoy what Grenen has to offer.

We read that the beach is also one of the best places to see birds and sea mammals, but the closest we found to a seal was a jelly fish...

My favourite part about the beach is how quiet and untouched it was. Clearly we were there in the off-season because there's over 2 million visitors a year, but the morning we went there were only a few other people. The picture above shows how it was so beautiful how the water pulled the sand over the rocks on the shore.

On the walk towards the end of the beach are a couple of these bunkers. We have heard that they were German bunkers from world war II but I don't know much more about them. I had seen pictures before coming of people being on top of them, so I wanted to try. I didn't realize though just how high up they were.

With the help of a big boost up I climbed into the opening, not thinking about the fact I would have to get back down again. Despite scraping my boots (and knees?) the views from the top were definitely worth it.

From up above, it was much easier to see the shape of the beach and the curves of the shoreline.

As we were leaving, the sun was starting to go behind clouds and it felt like the sun was setting which made the views even more dreamy. Especially because it feels like we get no sun here.

Skagen has definitely been a highlight for us here in Denmark. Its a shame it is so far from Copenhagen because I think a lot of people would miss out on it if they ever visited. I'm so thankful for all the things we get to see that we probably never would have thought to add to our plans.
